DESCRIPTION:Workshop Overview:\n\nThe ISS Program is proud to present a wor
 kshop on intellectual property from the Canadian Intellectual Property Off
 ice (CIPO) and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.  CIPO is res
 ponsible registering patents\, trade-marks\, copyrights\, industrial desig
 ns and integrated circuit topographies in Canada.  Their accomplished IP l
 eaders will introduce the Canadian IP system and raise awareness of IP by 
 introducing basic concepts such as\n\nthe importance and strategic use of 
 IP\;\n	an introduction to trade secrets\, patents\, trade-marks\, copyright
 s and industrial designs\;\n	useful resources and tips\;\n	links to IP publi
 cations and on-line tools\; and\n	contact information.\nMr .  Christian Caw
 thorn will be delivering the presentation called 'IP: What's in it for you
 ?' followed by the delivery of the Samatha Chang Case Study outlined below
 .\n\nParticipants will also have the chance to explore and apply issues in
  IP by participating in a case study with an experienced discussion leader
 .   The case study (see below) will cover:\n\nValue of trade-marks and pat
 ents and of trade secrets\n	Types of IP \n	Defining and protecting a new dis
 covery\n	Disclosure\n	Criteria for patentability\n	Value of information found
  in IP databases\n	IP ownership\nStudents are expected to read the case and

 a Chang: Who Owns the Invention?\n\nJust after she turned 18 and before st
 arting classes at Provincial Technical University (PTU)\, Samantha Chang g
 ot a summer job in the PTU engineering research lab. She works in the labo
 ratory of Professor John Milbourne. Samantha's status is unclear as the pr
 ofessor pays a small monthly stipend out of a miscellaneous research accou
 nt for work delivered.\n\nThat summer Professor Milbourne's lab was puzzli
 ng out a quality control problem faced by a client\, AutoPartsCo. As part 
 of this project\, Samantha develops and implements an idea worth thousands
  of dollars to the client company. The client wants to file a patent on th
 e idea.\n\nSample questions\n\n    What rights does Samantha Chang have re
 garding her idea?\n	    Is Samantha's idea patentable since it uses existin
 g technology?\n	    What rights does the company\, AutoPartsCo\, have in re
