Canada needs decisive, coordinated action to be part of next wave of AI innovation

Published: 14 January 2026

As AI reaches a pivotal moment, Canada鈥檚 early leadership is being challenged by rapid global shifts.聽鈥淥ther nations are investing at unprecedented scale, while Canada risks falling behind if it does not act decisively,鈥 says Maxime Cohen, Professor of Retail and Operations Management.

In a聽white paper on the state of AI in Canada, Cohen writes that Canada has a narrow but meaningful window to define its AI future. With decisive and coordinated action, Canada can build a globally distinctive model of AI innovation grounded in excellence, trust, sustainability, and societal benefit.聽However,聽without that action, Canada risks becoming a research supplier to other nations rather than a full participant in the next wave of AI-driven economic transformation. 鈥淭he moment is urgent,鈥 Cohen writes, 鈥淎nd the opportunity is ours to seize.鈥
