Biography:

Dr. Leo Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and a member of the ��VR��Ƶ Research Centre for Complex Traits. He specializes in molecular virology and antiviral innate immunity, focusing on respiratory RNA viruses such as influenza viruses and coronaviruses, as well as the RIG-I-like receptor family. His current research includes RNA virus biology, innate immune sensing and regulatory mechanisms, and respiratory RNA virus attenuation and vaccine design. The Liu Lab employs cutting-edge experimental approaches, integrating genome-wide phenotypic screens, reverse genetics, and animal models to elucidate the host-virus interface at a molecular level. Dr. Liu has been recognized with several awards, including the 2021 Pfizer Junior Investigator Award from the International Cytokine & Interferon Society and the 2023 Postdoctoral Leadership & Service Award from Cleveland Clinic.

Biography:

Dr. Nicole E. Basta, PhD MPhil, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health at ��VR��Ƶ and holds a Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in Infectious Disease Prevention. As an infectious disease epidemiologist, Dr. Basta combines methods and approaches from epidemiology, biostatistics, vaccinology, immunology, ecology, and public health to design, implement, and analyzing biological, clinical, and behavioral research. She aims to 1) evaluate the impact of vaccines and immunization programs, 2) increase vaccine awareness, acceptance, and uptake, and 3) advance our understanding of the epidemiology and natural history of infectious diseases. She has focused on a number of globally challenging viral and bacterial diseases, including influenza, HPV, measles, and meningococcal disease. Dr. Basta’s research generates critical evidence needed to optimize disease prevention and control strategies and to inform public health policy. She earned her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Washington, her MPhil in Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge as a Gates-Cambridge Scholar, and her undergraduate degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University. Dr. Basta also gained experience as an infectious disease outbreak investigator with the Florida Department of Health’s Epidemic Intelligence Service.

Biography:

Dr. Qian Liu (Vivian) is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Parasitology. Her research focuses on understanding the virus-host interactions during the infection and transmission of emerging zoonotic viruses (e.g. Nipah virus, norovirus and SARS-CoV-2). She uses the cutting-edge super-resolution microscopy to quantitatively map out the dynamics and spatial organizations of virus-host interactions (protein nanoclusters) in cells and virus particles. She teaches an undergraduate course “Eukaryotic Cells and Virus) (ANSC 400) and a graduate course “Fluorescent Microscopy in Microbiology”.

Biography:

Dr. Maziar Divangahi is an Associate Professor of Medicine, the Associate Director of the Meakins-Christie Laboratories, Co-Leader of the Respiratory Program at ��VR��Ƶ Health Centre, and an Associate Director of the ��VR��Ƶ International TB Centre. He is an internationally recognized pulmonary immunologist. The overarching focus of his research program is to investigate the regulatory mechanisms involved in host resistance and disease tolerance against major pulmonary bacterial (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) and viral (influenza virus and SARS-CoV2) pathogens. He is currently investigating how to harness the power of innate immunity in vaccine via reprogramming of hematopoietic stem cells. Throughout his career, he has published in outstanding journals and received numerous awards, including a CIHR New Investigator Award, FRQS Award, and the CIHR Foundation grant. He is a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada and holds the Strauss Chair in Respiratory Diseases.
