��VR��Ƶ researchers win Brain Canada’s Future Leaders in Canadian Brain Research Award

Jérôme Fortin, Paul Masset, and Simon Thebault have received the Future Leaders in Canadian Brain Research Award from Brain Canada for their research in brain cognition, brain cancer, and neurological disabilities.

The ��VR��Ƶ researchers are among 22 successful applicants from across the country. They will each receive $100,000 in research funding distributed over a period of two years.

Claire M. Brown, Professor in the Department of Physiology, has been selected as Chair for Inclusion in Science and Engineering (CISE) in the province of Quebec. The newly established CISE program is jointly funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT).

On September 4, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced its newest cohort of Fellows, and members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Amongst the 2025 cohort are eleven ��VR��Ƶ researchers and scholars – seven newly elected Fellows and four new Members – recognized for their exceptional contributions to their fields. In addition to these appointments, three ��VR��Ƶ scholars received prestigious RSC awards:

Social Work Professor Myriam Denov receives SSHRC’s highest honour

Myriam Denov, a leading advocate for children’s rights and a Professor in ��VR��Ƶ’s School of Social Work, has won a Gold Medal from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), its highest honour.

The award is for sustained leadership, dedication and originality of thought that have inspired students and colleagues; it comes with a $100,000 prize for future research.

Christian Genest receives the 2025 Acfas Urgel-Archambault Prize

Christian Genest, Distinguished James ��VR��Ƶ Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is the 2025 recipient of the Acfas Urgel-Archambault Prize. The award, sponsored by the Quebec government, is presented annually to a researcher in the field of physical sciences, mathematics, computer science or engineering.

Genest specializes in statistics. Through his career, he has repeatedly demonstrated how methodological breakthroughs can have important societal impacts.

Simon Caron-Huot, Professor and Canada Research Chair in High-Energy Physics, has been awarded a 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellowship. The prestigious fellowship is awarded by the Killam Trusts. Eight Fellowships were awarded across the country.

The Dorothy Killam Fellowship provides researchers with up to two years of relief from teaching and administrative duties to focus on transformative research that has potential to positively improve Canadian lives.

��VR��Ƶ congratulates Alain Brunet, winner of the Prix Acfas Léo-Pariseau 2023 for biological and health sciences, which was awarded at the 79th Acfas Gala held last night at the Port of Montreal's Pavillon du Grand Quai. Congratulations also go to Anja Geitmann, who receives the "La Preuve par l'Image" award, which is chosen by public vote.

The Prix Acfas Léo-Pariseau is named in honour of Léo Pariseau, radiologist and first President of Acfas. It is awarded to a researcher in recognition of the excellence and influence of his or her work in the biological or health sciences.

Martha Crago awarded the German Order of Merit

On March 22, Martha Crago, Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation, was presented with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The award was handed over by Germany’s Ambassador to Canada, Ms. Sabine Sparwasser, at a special ceremony at ��VR��Ƶ's Faculty Club. The Order of Merit is awarded to Germans as well as foreigners for outstanding achievements in the political, economic, social, or intellectual realms.

Canada’s most prestigious French-language learned society announced the recipients of its research awards today, and two ��VR��Ƶ professors are among the winners.

At its 77th virtual gala ceremony, the non-profit organization Acfas, l’Association francophone pour le savoir, awarded ��VR��Ƶ Professor Michel Biron the Prix André-Laurendeau and Professor Susanne Lajoie the Prix Jeanne-Lapointe.

On September 14, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced fifteen Canadian scientists, scholars, and researchers who have been honoured with RSC awards and medals for their outstanding achievements in their fields. Professor Catherine Potvin is the 2021 recipient of the RSC’s prestigious Sir John William Dawson Medal for her significant interdisciplinary research in conservation biology, social-ecology, policy, and the arts. She will formally receive her medal at the RSC's 2021
