Letter from the Director

How do we embrace new technologies while addressing their effects on democratic debate and social cohesion? How do we solve global challenges like pandemics or climate-induced migration in a world of increasing geopolitical rivalry? How do we include marginalized communities in the design of economic growth strategies? And how should we leverage new tools to evaluate whether public policies are having a positive impact on the prosperity and health of our societies? There aren鈥檛 simple answers, but these are the types of questions future policy leaders must be ready to embrace.听听

At 成人VR视频鈥檚 Max Bell School of Public Policy, our focus is on preparing students to tackle today鈥檚 most pressing policy issues with clarity, depth, and purpose. Located in the vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Montreal, the school is deeply connected to public policy leaders in Canada and internationally. These partnerships are central to the school鈥檚 mission and give students access to real-world experience while they learn.听听Portrait of Jennifer Welsh, Director of the Max Bell School of Public Policy

This hands-on approach to policy education is a big part of the school鈥檚 DNA. Theory alone won鈥檛 cut it, which is why the Max Bell School weaves the complexities of today鈥檚 policymaking into its programme. From understanding how governments and international institutions work, to learning how to bring the right evidence to bear on policy-making and cope with a new information ecosystem, learning here is tied to concrete policy challenges. Students are pushed to propose principle-based policy solutions while recognising the limits of what鈥檚 politically and practically possible and the tough trade-offs that many policymakers must make.聽

By focusing on both theory and implementation, the 11-month Master of Public Policy strikes an unusual balance among programs of its kind. The MPP鈥檚 core courses give students a firm grounding in the ethical, legal, economic and political questions that dominate contemporary policymaking. Policy Case Studies 鈥 short, focused courses led by policy practitioners 鈥 allow students to explore real policy initiatives from every angle 鈥 including why and how they were designed, the political, economic and social considerations that shaped their evolution, and the coalitions of stakeholders that were critical to their success. Complexity Seminars help students understand a policy domain - whether it鈥檚 humanitarian action, artificial intelligence, industrial policy, or the energy transition - from multiple perspectives. And the Policy Lab 鈥 a capstone project 鈥 pairs student teams with real policy clients to tackle the live issues confronting organizations in a variety of sectors.听听

Throughout the program, whether within or beyond campus, students are encouraged to sharpen their analytical abilities, expand their knowledge and develop their teamwork skills, leaving them emboldened to make an impact. We also foster a tight-knit community to support student learning, with regular opportunities to engage with Faculty, guest speakers and visitors to the school. Alumni have joined organisations like the World Food Programme, the International Organisation for Migration, Her Majesty鈥檚 Treasury, the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, Canada鈥檚 Department of National Defence, and others. Join this team of bold thinkers and better policy pioneers -- apply to 成人VR视频鈥檚 Max Bell School today.听听
