Lou took an electrophysiological approach to studying mechanosensitive ion channels. His听work centered on the identification and characterization of the channels underlying our ability to sense mechanical pain. Lou听is听now pursuing a Ph.D in neuroscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Billy studied the mechanisms underlying pain sensitization in osteoarthritis, with particular focus on the contribution of mechanosensitive ion channels (MSCs) which populate pain-sensing neurons. Using electrophysiology, behavioural testing, and various immunological techniques, he听investigated听the changes in the properties of MSCs as well as the putative听mechanisms that bring about these changes in a mouse model of osteoarthritis.
Anna Long Qian
Undergraduate student
Anna is听in her听last year of the Honours Physiology undergraduate program. She听joined the laboratory in July 2015. Using molecular biology and immunostaining techniques, Anna听studied听the connectivity of parvalbumin-expressing interneurons in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. She听focused听on the relationship between parvalbumin-expressing neurons and their post-synaptic targets.
Makoto Usuike
Undergraduate student
Makoto is a student in the Microbiology and Immunology program, and she听joined the laboratory in September 2015. Makoto听worked听on the development of a protocol for the optical clearing of spinal cord tissue.
