Welcome to the Department of Bioresource Engineering

³ÉÈËVRÊÓÆµ's Department of Bioresource Engineering is part of theÌýFaculty of Agricultural and Environmental SciencesÌýofÌý³ÉÈËVRÊÓÆµ. Bioresource Engineering is a discipline that combines engineering, biology, and design to create sustainable systems using living organisms and natural resources. It addresses challenges in food production, environmental protection, and resource conservation through technologies like agricultural systems, water treatment, renewable energy, and ecosystem restoration. The field emphasizes eco-friendly, innovative solutions across various specializations.

Mission

The Department of Bioresource Engineering at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓÆµ is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service with a focus on achieving global food security and sustainable management of natural and built environments.


Vision

  • To consistently graduate engineers qualified to design innovative solutions for complex challenges in agri-food, biological, and environmental systems in accordance with the workforce demand.
  • To sustain and continuously improve an accredited engineering curriculum that develops all the key attributes needed for successful engineering careers in bio-environmental, bio-production, bio-process, and related industries.
  • To conduct state-of-the-art, collaborative, and well-funded research that drives fundamental and applied innovations in the theory and practice of sustainable development.
  • To graduate highly qualified personnel who can advance the cutting-edge of science and engineering related to natural resources (soil, water, plants, animals, food, biomaterials, climate, ecosystems) and their sustainable management.
  • To promote the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and best practices among scientists, industries, governments, and the public related to tools and technologies for agriculture, food, natural resources, and ecology.

The B.Eng. (Bioresource) curriculum is delivered in collaboration with other departments including those in theÌýFaculty of Engineering. Graduates may apply to register asÌý across Canada and beyond. The Professional Agrology program qualifies graduates to also register with theÌý.

The Department of Bioresource Engineering offers M.Sc. (thesis) and Ph.D. programs focused on a diverse array of research topics (link to Research). In addition, we offer non-thesis M.Sc. and M.Sc.A. programs, such as Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), Integrated Food and Bioprocessing (IFB), and Environmental Engineering.

B3EThe Departments of Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Bioresource Engineering (B3E) at ³ÉÈËVRÊÓÆµ form a dynamic interdisciplinary ecosystem that bridges engineering with biological sciences, medicine, agriculture, and the environment. These departments span three faculties—Engineering, Medicine and Health Sciences, and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

The Bioresource Engineering EDI Committee, chaired by Prof. Chandra Madramootoo, is dedicated to promoting diversity, ensuring equity, recognizing Black history, and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
